Graphic artist Ben Graham draws inspiration from life experiences, a keen sense of observation, and a healthy dose of humor. His original installation of Sign Language was purchased by the City of Lansing and is permanently installed downtown of the Michigan capital. Emberlight has commissioned Ben to create a new version of Sign Language, an environmental installation of communication devices that uses traditional institutional means to convey non-traditional social messages.
Ben explains, “All too often, communication does not take place because of an assumed and inherent (mis)understanding of universal comprehension or knowledge…’Sign Language’ takes the constructive aspect of this premise to the streets, confronting and engaging its audience and the general public directly, on many levels.” As a U.P. native and former Art in the Park judge, Ben’s work promises an interesting new twist on his original concept.
