A retired college professor from Ontonagon, John M. Niska has been capturing images since the age of 10, when he received his first camera as a 4-H member. His lifelong passion for photography deepened during his senior year of college while studying abroad in Ecuador, where he became drawn to documenting cultural themes and everyday human experiences — a focus that continues to shape his photography during international travels today.
John’s work spans landscapes, intimate studies of the natural world, and culturally inspired portraits of individuals and communities. His photography reflects both a keen artistic eye and a deep curiosity about people, place, and atmosphere.
In recent years, his work has earned recognition in both the Detroit News and Lake Superior Magazine annual photo contests. Most notably, his image Lake Superior Sunset was awarded the Grand Prize in the Lake Superior Magazine Photo Contest in 2022.
John credits coursework at the Rhode Island School of Design and the New York Institute of Photography with helping him further refine his artistic vision and technical craft.
